Block Watch is a crime map that shows recent crime reports for the cities and areas you choose. It pulls public crime records from the open data portals of the cities it supports.
This extension does not collect any personal data. It has no accounts, no login, and no server of its own. It only reads public crime records from the open data APIs of the cities you select.
When you pick a city, the extension asks that city's public open data API for recent crime records for the area you selected. The only data sent is the city and area you chose, plus a bounded time window and the result limit. No personal information, location history, or browsing data is ever sent. You can see the exact public sources in the popup: data.cityofchicago.org, data.cityofnewyork.us, data.sfgov.org, data.lacity.org, and api.usa.gov.
Your chosen areas, settings, and any cached reports are stored in your browser's local storage on your own device. They never leave your browser and are cleared when you clear browser data or uninstall the extension.
Chrome's alarm and notification systems are used so the extension can refresh your chosen areas and alert you to new reports even when the popup is closed. These run locally in your browser.
